CSE Performances of the Week | Week 1

Texas (5-0)

Texas dominated the weekend at the Stacy Winsberg Tournament in California with a perfect 5-0 record and many wins in convincing fashion. They outscored their opponents by a tally of 64-5 while slugging 10 homeruns and giving up only a total of 14 hits. Reece Atwood led the charge offensively with three homeruns herself and compiled 11 hits in 15 chances. The Texas staff held opponents to a .140 batting average over the weekend and received dominant outings from Mac Morgan, who threw a five inning no hitter against San Diego and Citlaly Gutierrez, who threw a five inning shutout against #10 UCLA. The weekend also consisted of another win over UCLA 3-2, a win over LMU 10-2 (6), and another win over San Diego 16-1 (5).

Boston U (5-0)

Boston University made history this weekend at the Frank Griffen Classic in DeLand, FL, as their their two top pitchers, Kasey Ricard and Allison Boaz, threw consecutive no-hitters on the Terrier’s first day of the season winning 8-0 against Binghamton and 6-0 against SIUE. Ricard’s performance against Binghamton marked the first opening day no-hitter since 1994 and secured Head Coach, Ashley Waters, as the winningest coach in program history with a total of 272 wins. All-American senior shortstop, Kayla Roncin, continued her dominance at the plate dating back to last season by going 13-20 at the plate and senior outfielder, Lauren Keleher, went 11-17, tallying five extra base hits as well as seven RBI. The Terriers finished the weekend by defeating SIUE once more 9-5 and Stetson University 7-2 and 10-0 (5) respectively.

Honorable Mentions

Penn State (5-0)-

Penn St. finished their weekend 5-0 at the Paradise Classic in Florida with wins over Marshall, Florida Atlantic, #16 Arkansas, and Ohio University. The Nittany Lions pitching staff, led by freshman, Bridget Nemeth, allowed just a .179 batting average to opposing hitters while surrendering only seven runs in the five games they played. Nemeth earned 2024’s first Big 10 pitcher of the week with her outstanding performance.

Duke (3-1)-

Duke garnered a 3-1 record in the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge, in Mexico, this weekend while playing in a pool with the best in the nation. Their only blemish was a close loss to the 2x defending champion Oklahoma Sooners. Outside of that game, the Blue Devils compiled wins against #18 Nebraska 6-1, Iowa St. 16-3, and Long Beach St. 2-0. Jala Wright led the pitching staff giving up only one run in her 10.2 innings while striking out 13 batters.

Coastal Carolina (4-0)

Coastal Carolina started the season strong with a 4-0 record at the Kickin’ Chicken Classic in South Carolina. The Chanticleers surrendered only four runs to their competition and in the last three games, gave up only one hit. Junior, Nicolette Picone, threw a 5 inning perfect game against Bucknell University while senior, Raelee Brabham, and freshman, Kaitlyn Ryan, combined for a complete game no-hitter against George Washington University.
